HISTORY ASPECTS -
The Focke-Wulf Fw 200C-4 Condor was originally developed as a long-range civilian airliner but was quickly adapted by the Luftwaffe for military use during World II. With its exceptional range and capacity for maritime reconnaissance, bombing, and anti-shipping roles, the Fw 200 became a formidable threat in the early years of the . The C-4 variant was equipped with strengthened airframes, additional defensive armament, and a bomb bay, making it far more capable in combat than its civilian predecessor.
One of the Condor’s most significant contributions came in the Battle of the Atlantic. From bases in occupied France and Norway, Fw 200s of units like KG 40 patrolled vast areas of the North Atlantic, scouting for Allied convoys and relaying their positions to U-boat wolf packs. The aircraft themselves were also responsible for directly sinking or damaging merchant vessels with bombs and torpedoes. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously referred to the Fw 200 as "the scourge of the Atlantic," due to the havoc it wreaked on Allied shipping.
Despite its early success, the Fw 200 became increasingly vulnerable to Allied air superiority and long-range escort s by the mid- period. Its large size, relatively slow speed, and structural weaknesses under combat loads made it a growing liability in contested airspace. Nevertheless, the Condor remained in service until late in the , used for transport, maritime patrol, and liaison duties. Its legacy remains as one of the most impactful maritime patrol aircraft of the early years.
This 1 - 144 scale model recreates the iconic long-range Luftwaffe aircraft in striking detail, complete with accurate markings and configuration. A perfect addition to any WWII aircraft collection, it captures the power and menace of the “Atlantic scourge” in a compact, display-ready form.
